Technology is currently being developed to create shape-shifting smartphones. This sci-fi sounding gadgetry uses intelligent materials which allow your phone to change shape according to context. The research has been conducted by scientists at the University of Bristol in the UK and they recently unveiled their incredible innovations. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the shape-altering smartphones affectionately dubbed ‘Morphees’.
Smartphones can do a hundred different things and as technology progresses, their features and functions will only increase. Researchers are currently developing intelligent hardware that will change shape to fit the different uses of a phone.
How Do Morphees Work?
In order to achieve shape-shifting devices, scientists have employed new plastics and metals that react to an electric charge. The electric charge forces the material to change shape. But, how does it know what shape to become? Well, that’s the really clever part. The metals have a memory and will ‘remember’ the shapes they have been ‘trained’ to make.
The Bristol University team of researchers envisage dedicated apps that can be downloaded to install a particular shape. Simply put, the app will train the phone to take on a specific form, so you will be able to choose the shapes to suit you. For example, your phone could curve at the edges to become a comfortable console controller for playing video games. Or, the screen could fold up to offer privacy if you’re making a purchase or banking online.
Dr Anne Roudaut, research leader, stated the aims of the project, “We believe future mobile phone devices will be able to change shape on their own. For example if you have an app for a game and select it your phone will automatically change shape for you to play it.”
Shape-Shifting Smartphones: Coming Soon to a Store near You
According to Dr Roudaut, mobile phone morphees could be available to buy in less than 15 years. This estimation is based on the length of time it took to develop touch screens. In the not-so-distant future, the shape of mobile phone technology will (literally) have changed beyond recognition.
Flexible technology is already being trialled, with prototypes of a completely bendable mobile phone recently unveiled by Samsung. A Californian tech company have also revealed a shape-shifting touch screen, with a ‘bumpy’ keyboard that rises from the screen to make typing easier. The versatile keyboard appears and disappears as needed, leaving behind a perfectly smooth screen when not in use.
All this incredible technology has us wondering what else researchers and manufacturers have up their sleeves. What do you think of it all? Do you want a smartphone with all the bells and whistles or do you prefer to keep it simple? Is the future of mobile phones the morphee or will it be just another fad? Let us know!
